Bhavish Aggarwal and Ankit Bhati story to start ola cabs
Ola cabs is one of the most innovative business modals of the modern era. Bhavish did his engineering from IIT Bombay one of the most reputed engineering colleges in India. But his story to start ola cab is a lot more interesting .
“Do you want to be a travel agent “
That is what his father said to him when he first shared his business plan with his father. On his parent’s wish he did his engineering from IIT Bombay. After his graduation he worked for Microsoft for almost 2 years. After that he resigned from his job.
Every successful business was first a thought
He thought that he can do job whenever he want. But if he didn’t took a step now he will not be able to start his start up.
This situation reminds me of the famous dialogue of TVF pitchers. ” When ever the graduates of this country gets bore from their 9 to 5 jobs. Then they think of only options
- Start up!
After a lot of research he listed some short duration holidays on his website. Though he faced some family objections. His father even suggested him to do MBA. But he followed his gut feeling to explore this industry even more.
Failure of Ola Trip
He didn’t got any response on olatrip. He even distributed pamphlets outside common wealth games held in 2010. So that he might find some clients there, but he was not able to sell even a single package.
His idea to start ola cabs
One day when rent a car to go from Bangalore to bandipur. The driven started renegotiating about money. And when Bhavish said no to his demands. He left him in middle of his journey. He started think how difficult it is to find good cab service in India.
One day while talking to a client about his package. He said “ Nainital jaana hai yaar.. Gaadi dila de” .
That is when he realized that people don’t need him or ola trip to go to a place they just need a car.
After this he along with his friend Ankit Bhati decided to start another website olacabs.com. And In 2010 he finally started to give cars on rent through his website.
After 7 to 8 months people started reorganizing ola cabs that were solving a real life problem.
“Don’ sell a product
sell a solution”
This quote suits this situation perfectly.
After 2012 when ola cab launched their app. They started getting popular through word of mouth. Investors found a good opportunity in it. There was a lot of problems while choosing drivers for their cabs. He sometimes himself went to pick up passenger if there was no available driver.
